Evie waited in Bay One, watching the two ships approach the open end of the bay itself. She stood near the far side where the corridors connected to the rest of the ship, well out of the way of any approaching ships. And yet she felt exposed out here. Her last experience on a shuttle had caused her to avoid the bays ever since, but as captain she felt she had a duty to be here to meet their new “allies” despite being completely blindsided.

What had she told him? No unnecessary risks. And what had he done? He’d brought an entire contingent of Bulaq back with him, all of which could be nothing more than a boarding party in disguise. Cas had emphasized he’d found no weapons on any of them and their ship wasn’t equipped with offensive capabilities. Regardless, Evie had made sure a contingent of Rafnkell’s fighters had met the ships and she’d also had Uuma assemble a security team to greet them when they disembarked. She’d been surprised to learn he’d traveled on the Bulaq shuttle and one of the Bulaq had done the same on their shuttle. He hadn’t said much about it but had relayed the information in a tone that told her he’d explain later. He damn well better because she wasn’t about to have this ship overrun with Bulaq looking for an easy poach.

She’d forgone a weapon herself, the dozen armed security personnel behind her said everything she needed to. Evie almost stopped by her quarters for her sword but decided it might be in bad taste. She had to lead this crew now and she couldn’t go off on a whim like that, not that she could have before anyway.

The Hymettus landed first, taking her regular spot. Through the windshield Captain Jann and Laura were visible, Laura throwing Evie a brief wink as the shuttle landed. She exhaled for what felt like the first time in three days. Everything was okay between them, good. She couldn’t afford to be distracted right now, not when their survival depended on what happened in the next few minutes.

The second ship came in and executed a perfect landing in an area designated by the flight control team on the deck. Despite their unfamiliarity with Coalition procedure, they did a fair job following the team’s commands. The Bulaq ship didn’t seem to have a port to see on the inside, instead it was fully opaque. Evie figured they must use remote camera sensors to see what’s ahead of them.

The crew of the Hymettus exited first, led by Laura who, upon getting a good look at Evie’s face, transformed her own from one of amusement to sorrow. Had she been able to tell what had happened to Captain Greene from just the look on Evie’s face? She needed to do a better job at hiding her emotional state. It wouldn’t do for the crew to see her worried or angry; they needed her calm, collected, and sure of herself.
